She was a native of Atlanta, and a member of Beecher Hills Baptist Church for many years and later Crabapple Baptist Church, she was a substitute teacher for the Atlanta Public School System for many years and was active with the Alpharetta Senior Citizens Organization. DOWLING John Edward Dowling, 85, of Woodfire Way, Casselberry, Florida, died on April 14, 2000 congestive heart failure. Preceded in death the late Olga Mary Dalida Dowling and was the father of the late Brian Edward Dowling.

Born in Providence, RI, John had a distinguished sales and management career. Beginning with Brown and Williamson Tobacco John also introduced "vitamins" into the marketplace with Miles Laboratory. The John H. Breck Company chose John to introduce the complete line of "Breck Shampoos" all across the Southwest. After a strong career with "Breck" the Helena Rubenstien Cosmetics Company chose him to lead it's beauty regime into better department and drug stores.

It was in the early 60's that John joined the "Irving W. Rice Co" and sold its complete selections of imported, crystal perfume bottles, "nite lites" and porcelain accessories to all types retail outlets. His two sons followed him into the same business. John retired in 1977. He moved to Central Florida in 1970, and was member of St.

Stephens Roman Catholic Church since it's beginning. Kelly Leak Funeral Home, 2321 Candler Road, Decatur, 404-284-9100. KOKKO U. PENTTI KOKKO, 90 physician, scientist, CDC administrator Dr. U. Pentti Kokko, a renowned clinician-scientist died April 15, 2000 at Bay Village Infirmary at Sarasota, Florida.

He was 90. Dr. Kokko was born in Finland receiving his formal medical education at the University of Helsinki. He had fought in two wars against the Russians and when he saw that the Communists took over Czechoslovakia he decided that Finland was a risk and took the brave step to move hi entire family to US in 1949. He initially continued his formal education by receiving a doctorate in public health from the Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Kokko's main academic accomplishments were in the area of polio vaccine development and later in assuring wide distribution of the vaccine to children. He has published broadly and held academic positions at Johns Hopkins, the U. of Southern California and the U. of Louisville.

He moved to Atlanta in 1955 to work in various administrative positions at the Communicable Disease Center (CDC). He was deeply committed to the mission of the CDC and loved the work there. After retiring from the CDC he worked for two years at the World Health Organization in Switzerland prior to retiring in Sarasota, Florida in 1973. Dr. Kokko is survived by his four children, Juha Kokko, MD, PhD (Atlanta, GA), Anu Cadenhead (Jacksonville, FL), Maija Baynes (Lake Wales, FL), and Timo Kokko (Lansing, MI).

Also he is survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. According to Finnish-Karelian customs there will be no funeral services. Thomas, age 87 of Jefferson, died Sunday, April 16, 2000. Born in Fulton County, Mr. Thomas was a retired truck driver with Akers Motor Lines. He served in the U.S. Navy on U.S.S.

Rombach during WWII. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Alline Pruitt Thomas and his two sons, Harvey E. Thomas and Fred A. Thomas.
